My business coach attracts healers from all different modalities.
Through attending group coaching with her, I’ve encountered a hypnotherapist, several parenting coaches (who help parents heal their relationships with their children and themselves), healers of the land (landscape designer), healers of the body (fascia release specialist and brain-based personal trainer) and two sound healers.
It is these sound healers that I want to talk about today.
I’ve experienced two live sound healing sessions through my business retreats. While others in my group said they’ve experienced deep emotional release during sound healing sessions, I did not experience that effect.
What I did encounter was something odd - when these sound healers played their crystal bowls and my neck was relaxed, it would involuntarily rotate to the rhythm of the music.
That was too weird for me, so I stiffened up to prevent movement, but it made me think that the sound was having an effect on my body, whether I realized it or not.
I’m a scientific / skeptical person so I wasn’t sure what to make of this.
However, a few weeks later, I came upon an article on the Stanford Medicine website that talked about scientists who were partnering to work on heart cells in a lab. They discovered that if they played sound of a certain frequency, the heart cells would arrange themselves in a certain configuration. They hoped to use this discovery to grow heart tissue in a lab.
I think that was what was going on my body – when I heard the sound healing music, it created automatic processes in my body that included involuntary movement (which the sound healer said was normal -- she had seen it before in other listeners.)
So I cautiously started experimenting with the sound healing.
I found some sound healing music on YouTube and found it rather relaxing. When I read reviews of the songs, many people said their pain went away with the music.
One day I was having a severe headache all day that Advil could not cure. I tried everything – ice pack, nap, yoga, self massage, no relief.
That evening, I was putting my seven-year old to bed and I turned on the sound healing music in the background when I was reading her a story for about 25 minutes.
As I turned out the light, I had a realization — no headache.
The only thing I can think of that was different was the sound healing music playing in the background.
I’ve researched why the sound healing music helped with pain and what I came across was that the music plays at a certain frequency that causes the brain waves to go into a meditative state. When our bodies are in rest and digest rather than fight or flight, we can relax and our bodies can heal themselves from pain.
I keep forgetting that this modality exists, but I recently had another headache and was too nauseated for Advil. When I listened to the music, I became deeply relaxed, was able to sleep, and my headache went away.
There is definitely a brain / body connection, as evidenced by the placebo effect, so if you want to try sound healing yourself, here’s the YouTube video I used. Let me know what happens for you.

Dear Readers,
I’m shifting to writing this newsletter every other week (or more sporadically) because my new goal is physical health.
Outside of working on my passion of coaching teens in my boutique college admissions and life skills consultancy, I want to spend less time on a screen.
As an extrovert I love live coaching, so if you know any high-performing teens who want to invest in a top 1% coach to achieve their dreams while creating lives they love, feel free to send them my way.
Thank you for your continued support,
Alice
I remember that day (exactly a year ago!) when your neck was moving to Tessa's sounds and you did NOT like it! I'm so glad you're finding sound is now helping relieve pain. Our bodies are made to heal naturally. Can you share a link to a track that's been helpful?
Love this - will check this out more. I love classical music and harps in particular when tired or rundown. this helps me understand more. I'll share a link to this in my Sunday newsletter. Thank you
